Belts are bought from a photograph and judged after a year of daily wear. These four decisions are what decide the second part.
Grade is the first question and the least asked
Full-grain is the outermost layer with the grain intact and it improves with use. Top-grain is the same layer lightly sanded and refinished: more uniform, better for a smooth formal belt. Genuine leather is a lower grade despite the reassuring name. Bonded leather is ground scraps on a backing.
Ask for the grade by name and get it written on the quote. A supplier who only writes leather has told you which end of that list they are working from.
Construction is where the shortcuts hide
A belt strap should be one solid strip. Two thin layers laminated together look identical when new and separate at the buckle fold with use. You can see the difference on the cut edge, so ask for a sample and look at it.
The buckle fold should be stitched as well as bonded. Glue alone is the most common failure in this category and it always goes at the same place.
Thickness follows how the belt is worn
A dress belt worn with a suit can be thin. A belt worn daily under real load cannot: a thin strap elongates at the hole and eventually tears from one hole to the next.
Pair a thicker strap with a roller buckle for anything worn every day. The strap drags across the bar each time the belt is fastened, and over years that abrasion is what wears it through.
Sizing is not trouser size
Belt size is measured from the buckle fold to the middle hole, and it is typically a couple of inches different from the wearer’s trouser size.
For a programme, collect worn measurements once and keep them. Doing this is the difference between a smooth rollout and a box of returns.
What to send when you ask for a quote
Artwork, quantity, the grade you want, how the belts will be worn, and the size spread. That is enough for a real quote and a mockup the same day.
Fine detail closes up when it is pressed into leather, so most marks need opening out rather than scaling. We redraw free.
